The Full Roll is a great way to embellish a chord with the left hand, especially when you are playing a ballad. Here is the formula:

R-5-9-3-5-7-5-3. Each of the notes is an eighth note. The fingering is 5-2-1-3-2-1-2-3.

Let's take the case of a C major chord. You would play C-G-D-E-G-B-G-E. In the last two notes, you are going back down the keyboard. Try it out! If you have any questions, feel free to email me. And check out my book Playing With Style that explains this plus many more techniques you can use for embellishments in the left hand.

Playing With Style

Next lesson on eNotes will come from a very accomplished jazz pianist, Mark Shilansky, who performs all over the country and is an Associate Professor of Music at the Berklee College of Music!
So I'll see you in a couple of weeks if not in a class.

take good care,
Debbie
